Some background

My photographic background

I’ve been an avid photographer since my father would occasionally lend me his old Argus camera back in the 1960s, although I didn’t have a camera of my own until 1973 when I bought a Pentax SP SLR camera. Initially I shot in black & white and had my own darkroom for processing the film and making prints, as it was a cheaper option than having the film processed.

Later I began shooting colour slides, and making Cibachrome prints from the slides in my darkroom (a bathroom with a makeshift table over the tub and the window blacked out).

As the low-res digital photography world unfolded, I began using digital cameras, albeit initially with 640 x 480 pixel resolution, which didn’t translate well into the modern world.

I continued to pick up new digital cameras as their resolution improved, and, in 2013, I bought a Canon EOS 6D DSLR, in 2015 a fast 24mm wide angle prime lens, & in 2017, a fast 14mm wide angle prime lens. In 2018 I started using a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera. I bought a 600mm prime lens for viewing the solar eclipse in 2024.

I find myself relying on my iPhone 17 Pro Max for more of my casual photography these days.

I also happened to begin using a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone in 2023, and you’ll see some of the resulting photos in the Aerial gallery.

Why this website?

I have had a range of personal websites over the last 30-odd years, and have posted a variety of material. This site represents my current interest. Being able to share my photos directly on the open web rather than through an intermediary gives me more control, and I happen to enjoy the process of bringing this website into being.

My “work” background

I first worked in an architect’s office in the summer of 1971 as a high school co-op student, which then turned into a summer job. I went on to eventually earn my degree in architecture, after working for others for a number of years, got registered, then opened my own practice in 1985. In 2025, I was officially fully retired after 40 years managing my own practice, and as I write this, I’m one year into that retirement.

What you’ll see on this website

My interest for most of my life has been rooted in cities—the built form and activities of urban life are typically are what you’ll see most of on this site. You’ll also see photos taken in my travels, dating back to a 1977 trip to Europe, followed by other trips most frequently to Europe and Asia, primarily Japan, since the 1980s.

How is site is being created?

After going from hand coding in HTML using BBEdit back in 1997, my path seems to to be best described as moving to easier and easier ways of creating my own websites. As I’ve been a Mac user since 1986, along the way, I’ve used a series of different Mac-based software products, including BBEdit, iWeb, Sandvox, and RapidWeaver, which I’ve used since 2007. This particular website is being authored in RapidWeaver’s Elements, a new software platform that migrates the older RapidWeaver into a more modern app.
